10 Reasons Why I Chose a Prius Camper

Like so many others who fawn over beautiful van life photos and videos, I dreamed of building out a big cargo van with all the space and modern comforts I could ever want. But as a small business owner who has a limited budget, I needed a vehicle that could get me where I want to go, but not for the price tag of a van or fancy camper.

Enter, the trusty Toyota Prius.

My 2014 Prius Hybrid Plug-In has become my trusted companion on the road for unique and budget-friendly adventures. As a woman who frequently travels solo, the benefits of car camping in a Prius extend far beyond its affordability & incredible fuel efficiency. In this post, I'll share why the Prius has become my go-to vehicle for solo journeys.

1, Fuel Efficiency for Frequent Wanderers

The Prius's renowned fuel efficiency is a game-changer for a young adventurer like me who craves the freedom to wander without constantly worrying about gas expenses. When compared to even a small van like the Ford Transit Connect, the Prius gets almost DOUBLE the mpg! I’d rather have more gas money to travel longer & farther.

2. Compact Car Camping

Maneuvering through city streets or finding serene camping spots off the beaten path is easier with the Prius than a larger cargo van or RV. It gives me access to a variety of destinations and fits easily in any parking spot. The size is compact, but still super comfortable for sleeping & with plenty of storage behind the seats for all your gear!

3. Budget-Friendly Adventures

Car camping in my Prius translates to less money spent on hotels and more dollars in my adventure fund. By converting the backseat into a cozy sleeping nook, I've cut accommodation costs and extended my budget for immersive experiences and traveling longer. As mentioned earlier, it’s also a lot cheaper than the bigger rigs out there and you’ll save tons of money on gas!

4. Convertible Interior for Cozy Nights

The adaptability of the Prius interior is a game-changer for solo car camping. Folding down the rear seats flat creates a comfortable sleeping space, turning my car into a mobile haven for rest after a day of exploration.

5. Dependability for Solo Safety

A reliable vehicle that won’t leave you stranded on sketchy back roads, is crucial on solo journeys. The Prius has consistently been named one of the most reliable vehicles - I’ve thus far had no breakdowns on the road and maintenance has been fairly inexpensive.

6. Stayin’ Stealthy Solo

As a solo female traveler, blending into the backdrop is a safety strategy. Sleeping in a car as opposed to a camper or RV allows me to stealth camp without drawing unnecessary attention. With my custom-made window covers, the car simply appears blacked out from the outside, allowing me to sleep in cities and busier parking lots with privacy.

7. An Eco Friendly Option

While not as eco-friendly as an electric vehicle, the hybrid Prius is still better for the climate than gas guzzlers. While I’d love to reduce my emissions to zero, right now this is the best environmental option within my budget and for longer range travel.

8. Climate Control

Possibly the most unique perk of the Prius is its ability to run AC or heat for longer periods of time. As someone who chases good weather, I rarely use this feature but it's great to know it’s possible in a pinch. The engine will turn on and off through the night to maintain your preferred temperature, saving on energy but keeping you comfortable.

9. Easy Build = On the Road Fast

While a build-out can be as simple or complex as you want, a Prius camper is generally less demanding than a big van or trailer reno. The bed is essentially already built in and you don’t have to break out any tools to get on the road. Just collect your camping essentials, plop a mattress in the back, and head out on an adventure.

10. Connecting with the Prius Community

You’d be surprised how many Facebook groups and meet-ups exist just for Prius campers! Whether you want to meet fellow travelers, share stories, or swap tips, the Prius community is welcoming & open to everyone. Plus, the larger “van life” community is really open to anyone traveling in whatever vehicle suits them best.

As a solo female traveler, my Prius isn't just a mode of transportation—it's a vehicle (pun intended) for freedom, adventure, and self-discovery. Car camping in a Prius has enabled me to embrace the open road and all the wonders it holds. Here's to more empowering solo adventures!
